In recent days, reports have been circulating that the USAF is rebuilding the airfield on Tinian, a small island about 120 miles NNE of Guam.
This airfield was where the B-29 bombers took off to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.
Given the current state of affairs, this is obviously another step towards war—in this case, the US preparing to take on China or any adversary operating in the region.
In a way, there is no need to be even more alarmed. This is hardly news. In April 2024, it was reported that the USAF awarded the contract for the work of rebuilding the airfield. The construction is reportedly to be completed within five years (but these things can easily take a fraction of that time).
Also, taking a broader view, the US already has military bases in Guam, including the naval base and the Andersen Air Force Base.
Satellite photos indicate some activity in recent months. What should be more concerning is not additional airfields or bases but that the EU has voted to lift the current restrictions on Ukraine on how it uses its weapons against Russia. That and pushing for war when so much ammo has been shoved to Ukraine to achieve nothing. I am not sure how one fights a war without ammo.
