My Verdict: Not as strong as the first season. Pacing can be better but overall a moderately entertaining follow-up.

● This review assumes that one has seen the first season.

● Although some time has elapsed since the end of the first season, this is still a direct continuation in terms of storytelling, and follows Jung Ji-ahn (Kim Hye-joon) and Jung Jin-man (Lee Dong-wook) as they fight Babylon.

● Since the first season deliberately keeps the background a mystery, more exposition is provided this season. The first episode follows Jin-man’s actions on the day Ji-ahn was attacked.

● Do not expect the same suspense and action like the first season.

● Ji-ahn has moved away in an attempt to distance herself from her uncle’s world (thinking that she could), and she is still traumatized by the experience.

● Although it may allow for better pacing and action for her to immediately adopt and embrace the “warrior” character, this is more natural.

● However, in order to not cheapen the significance of her choice, she can’t be too quickly dragged (back) into the action. Whilst this transition is handled well in terms of the character, it does initially stagnate the primary conflict and action.

● As such, the first half of the season is relatively slower, building up to the climax and resolution in the second half. That said, there is at least some action at measured intervals.

● Visually, like the first season, the cinematography and film editing are not over-stylized. After such a strong first season, it has an excuse to push the boundaries at least a little. For example, it would benefit if this season plays with camera angles and uses longer takes that follow the action more often.

● Even though this is a sort of action-fantasy, this season seems to take too many liberties, particularly with explosions that are conveniently too small and not damaging enough to the characters.

● Related to the above, the weakness is the CG bipedal droids and other CG effects which don’t look good. Setting aside the look, these droids aren’t necessary anyway as they are just trying too hard. That said, it is appreciated that the action involves drones which obviously have a substantial impact on combat and tactics.

● The music composed by Primary (and Genesio) is the same as the first season, taking a contemporary approach—for example, the use of synths—with very functional themes that fit the tension and action. It is noticeable but it works as it is cool even if it is nothing particularly special.

● The performances are solid with Jin-man’s team returning. The main villain is Kusanagi Jin, Babylon’s local branch leader. Although Jung Yun-ha does well, the character is unfortunately written too simply (even for the genre) as the ill-tempered and ambitious snob. She may be ambitious but it is difficult to accept someone so easily rattled do that well in the long-term.

Overall, it is nowhere near as strong as the first season and there are still questions as to how the conflict between Jin-man and Babylon had in the past progressed to where it is now. There can be more suspense and action but it is overall a moderately entertaining follow-up.
