It was reported on 17 February 2024, over seven hundred days since Russian military forces entered eastern Ukraine, that the Ukrainian forces will withdraw from Avdiivka, Donetsk.
Below is a quote from General Oleksandr Tarnavsky:
“Based on the operational situation around Avdiivka, in order to avoid encirclement and preserve the lives and health of servicemen, I decided to withdraw our units from the city and move to defence on more favourable lines…
“In a situation where the enemy is advancing over the corpses of their own soldiers with a ten-to-one shelling advantage, under constant bombardment, this is the only right decision. Encirclement was prevented, personnel were withdrawn, and our soldiers took up defence at the designated lines.”
Taking the above as is, which of the following best describes the text?
A: It is intended to convey the impression that Russia is winning.
B: It is intended to convey the impression that Ukraine is winning.
C: It is intended to convey the impression that Ukraine is winning against the big bad Russians despite withdrawing from Avdiivka.
D: It is supposed to be C but is poorly constructed so it ends up being A.
Answer: D. Losing troops and having a shelling advantage are not actually contradictions, but having a 10-to-1 shelling advantage is at least a minor hint that Russians are probably not going to lose this conflict provided it remains conventional.
This, of course, is consistent with what is propagated by governments and lamestream media regarding this conflict. More generally, this is not new. It may have intensified in recent years given certain events, such as the Trump presidency and the plandemic. Either way, poorly written public announcements and news may make half-interesting comprehension exercises for children.
Oh wait, they haven’t taught this to children for decades… we can’t have people growing up knowing how to think. Never mind, keep shoving money to Ukraine. Rah! They will win. Rah!
