Title: The Equalizer
Director(s): Antoine Fuqua
Screenwriter(s): Richard Wenk
Released: 2014
Runtime: 2h 12m
● Loosely based on the series created by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim, Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) is a former US Marine and intelligence operative who tries to mind his own business. Until he sees teenage prostitute Alina (Chloe Grace Moretz) get beat up and so he takes on the Russian mafia.
● Visually dark and gritty, it is a little too stylized with the slow motion but it mostly works well enough. With Denzel, one can get away with these things. Firearm action lovers would want more guns but McCall is a smart fighter. And it’s not just about the action, McCall also coolly does recon and goes after the small fry, giving them a chance first.
● Either way, it’s a satisfying vigilante film, particularly with a relatively long final showdown sequence. By the way, McCall works at a local hardware store so, yes, hardware tools are involved.
