San Francisco, CA – A Chinese mother does not understand why white women criticize her as “too abusive” for disciplining her children.

Jane, an immigrant from Hong Kong who has been living in the US for over twenty years, still uses the time-honored feather duster.
“I hit them hard but I no kill them, you know,” says Jane, “so no idea why people comprain.”
Jane is of the opinion that it is imperative to enforce order regardless of the circumstances: “Look at white children, so noisy and naughty. I no kill my children, I jut hit dem hard to make dem suffer for rong time. Then they suffer more when I make dem eat prain rice an they don’t dare be bad.”
Jane’s neighbor, Sofia, prefers the chankla.
“The chankla and yelling in Spanish works pretty well,” she says. “It also doesn’t leave as many marks and it doesn’t break.”
Jane, however, is not concerned about physical damage. “So what it I break the duster?! I broke one before because my children are stubbon and stiffnecked, I jut buy another one.”
